The Flagellated Woman and the Naked Bacchante

Explanation:
"Certainly the most famous and well remembered building of Pompeii, situated a little way outside the archaeological area, is the Villa dei Misteri, where the amazing "Pompeii red" colour stands out on the walls frescoed in the first century B.C.. In the central and best known room is a painted description of a Dionysian ceremony, in its different stages. First a young boy reads the ritual formula to a new girl-follower, then there is a scene of libation, while a satyr makes music, a priestess suckles a deer, and a woman is completely carried away by the "strange" rituals. Then there is another satyr with a mask; the god Dionysus resting comfortably on Ariadne; and a curious character showing off a mystic phallus, (object of cult interest) while a winged figure flagellates a woman who is huddled up in search of protection on the lap of a seated matron. At the same time a Bacchante dances naked, while a bride prepares herself. This is one of the largest of all surviving ancient paintings still kept in its original place: most others, such as the mosaic of the "Travelling Musicians", the "Young girl Writing" and the "Portrait of the Baker with his Wife" all being at the Archaeological Museum in Naples. "
