Le vicende del conflitto furono cosí varie ed intense, e, in alcuni periodi cosí accavallantisi l’una sull’altra, che non sempre e riuscito agevole fissare con precisione una data per la perdita totale di una nave. A volte si ebbe una immobilizzazione sia pure parziale e relativa, perchè l’unita rimase in attesa di essere rimorchiata in porti sicuri, ma sopravvennero spostamenti di fronte, occupazioni territoriali, o sabataggi, che ne suggellarono il destino, o dal punto di vista tecnico (affondamento) o dal punto di vista giuridico (cattura).
