Explanation:
This is a technique described in my Laura Ashley Home Decorating book, which is basically the application of paint using a loosely rolled rag to give an irregular colour pattern over the base coat in a different colour. I've never known the Italian term, but maybe this is it?

Explanation:
Would "lime whiting" work? It seems like a type of primer or tinta di fondo. Getting the surface white before painting.
Just a thought.
