lining leather 1st choice
Explanation:
Jo, sottotomaio is not very much used but I guess it refers to the leather used as lining. You have the leather for the upperleather and the one that goes inside the shoe. That one should be sottotomaio although in Italian is more common with the word Fodera. I am 100% sure about 1a, which is leather of first choice (that leather more expensive!)

I finally had the confirmation that sottotomaio or sottotomaia (which is much more used) stands for lining. Confirmed by my brother, a shoe manufacturing engineer. :)
