it's from a description by Goethe in referrence to the area surrounding Agrigento and the Valley of the Temples, so the Latin reference would make sense. Thanks for your help.

Ossignore, dammi pazienza... It's obviously not Clivo, the comune. I'm tempted to think of Latin - clivium - which indicates a declivio. Does that work for your context? Is the town located in a basin of some sort.

Clivio is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Varese in the Italian region Lombardy, located about 50 km northwest of Milan and about 10 km northeast of Varese, on the border with Switzerland. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 2,010 and an area of 2.9 km².
