Italian term or phrase: placconate e cenge aeree
same Valle d'Aosta tour guide:

Ci si porta sul versante meridionale della Gran Torre, evitandone lo spigolo, percorrendo placconate e cenge aeree verso destra; risalire un intaglio roccioso e attraversare l'incassato Vallon des Glaçons per portarsi, sempre seguendo le corde fisse verso sinistra, sul sovrastante terrazzino.

English translation:high, smooth rock faces and overhangs
Explanation:
De Mauro defines "placca" as follows:
"sport, nell’alpinismo, tratto di parete rocciosa liscia, quasi priva di appigli"
So this is a "big" placca - large, smooth rock face (or wall).

Similarly, cengia is a cornice, by which I understand "overhang"?

Placconata is also used as a proper noun in the names given to many climbing routes.
Grande Placconata, Placconata Nera, etc.
