In other words you order each dish from the menu, instead of ordering a dinner that comes complete with soup, salad, main course and desert, for one price. If it is a la carte, it is always more expensive.

agree  Lindsay Sabadosa: To be honest, I had never heard of an "a la carte restaurant" (a la carte dining, yes) because most just are that way but if you google this expression there are thousands of examples.

agree  Cecilia Di Vita: in the case of the restaurant of a hotel you may need to specify it's "a la carte", instead of offering a fixed menu, as bigedsenior has already said

agree  Russell Jones: some restaurants have a restaurant for the "package" or half-board residents and another "a la carte" for higher quality / more choice, also available to non-residents.
