Proponendo nuovamente un tema già sviluppato da Platone, Aristotele stabilisce la sequenza dove le lettere scritte sono "simboli" dei suoni della voce, che a loro volta sono "segni" delle "affermazioni dell'anima", le quali, infine, sono "immagini" delle "cose".
