Uomo di cultura e di spirito, ha voluto dichiarare che la sua virtù principale, quella di riscoprire e riproporre ai lettori di oggi testi del passato meritevoli di essere riscattati dall’oblio, era per lui un fattore ereditario. Discendeva infatti da un’onorata dinastia di rottamieri (suo nonno aveva un’impresa di demolizioni navali, e dopo la Grande Guerra si era comprato l’intera flotta austro-ungarica; ma mentre se la portava a casa, un fortunale gli affondò tutte le navi prima che potesse farle a pezzi lui); perciò fin da bambino era abituato a frugare tra i relitti, dove si possono trovare dei tesori.
