I Manuali Hoepli rispondevano ad un principio classificatorio del sapere: gli argomenti trattati erano suddivisi infatti per argomenti a loro volta suddivisi in varie serie: Serie scientifica, Serie pratica, Serie artistica e Serie speciale. Questa logica corrisponde al pensiero tipico dell’epoca di Ulrico Hoepli. Le Esposizioni Universali sono di quel periodo l’esempio più eclatante e imponente di questo sistema, che cercava di classificare il sapere e il patrimonio culturale da un punto di vista eurocentrico e i Manuali Hoepli sono “la versione da tasca di quell’organizzazione del mondo”. Il catalogo Hoepli può essere dunque interpretato come “corrispettivo libraio” delle Esposizioni Universali.
