Es geht hier um einen Brauch in der Maremma Viterbese:

"...le abitudini dei madriani locali, i butteri, che usavano catturare e domare gli animali che..."

Für "i butteri" habe ich die Übersetzung "berittene Hirten" gefunden. Meint "madriani" dasselbe, oder sind das "die Bewohner der Maremma"? Als Familienname scheint es sehr geläufig zu sein.

Das ist sicher ein Tippfehler, ich schätze, sie wollten mandriani - Viehhüter schreiben.
Butteri würde ich stehen lassen, du könntest ja "Viehhüter zu Pferde" schreiben, dann ist alles dabei.
