Japanese term or phrase: 知らず擦り切れていく
Dear ProZ members,

I'm in doubt about the meaning of 知らず in the following sentence. It may be stupid, but better safe than sorry. This is from a cartoon where people weave cloth in order to communicate their feelings.

年月の中で... 知らず擦り切れていく記憶を布が覚えていてくれる
(The memories that will wear out in time without you realizing it will be remembered by the cloth.)

Is my take correct? What feels strange to me is that I usually find 知らず followed by a particle (に or の) or preceded by a noun (like in 恥知らず), and I can't find examples similar to my sentence.

Thank you!
