Japanese to English translations [PRO]
Law (general)
Japanese term or phrase: 尊卑族
I suppose this term is only used in legal contexts to refer to elderly relatives. Does it mean parents and grandparents? Or is the range of relatives wider or narrower? (It is people for whom employees can take leave for the funeral.)
Thank you for any help.

Explanation:
Hi Mari,

I don't know of any way to express this succinctly in English based on Mika-san's explanations above. A brief check on the Internet seems to indicate that 尊卑族 does not include spouses or siblings (I could be wrong....)
So one suggestion would be to put "Immediate family" followed by an explanation in brackets to specify the actual family members this is supposed to encompass. Eg.
"immediate family (where this refers to the employee's parents, grandparents, children and/or grandchildren)", or
"immediate family (where this refers to the 2 younger and/or older generations of the employee's direct family members)".

If space is an issue, though, this may be problematic...
Even in English, definitions of "immediate family" vary greatly (see below), so I think it would be prudent to add an explanation regardless.
