As you may know, in Japan, patients pay 10 to 30% of their total medical bill out of pocket then the remaining 70 to 90% will be paid by the national or social health insurance organizations. Medical institutions issue a health insurance claim for the 70 to 90% and the contents of the claim will be audited for appropriateness of their medical practice. If the auditor finds any unnecessary examinations and/or inappropriate prescriptions, these items will be removed from the claim and they will be on the health care organizations’ bill.
