Japanese term or phrase: 下界
In a paper on Body Image in children:

そこで本研究は,発達的な視点から自己概念や下界を認識する際の重要な基礎となるbody imageについては,人物描画法を基に幼児が内在するbody imageを可視化する方法として取り上げた。

人物描画法 means "human figure drawing" and the idea is that by seeing how children draw pictures of people, we get an idea how they conceptualize their own body in their minds.

What does "下界" refer to here? Can someone help me understand the gist of the sentence?

Thanks in advance.

neutral  Maynard Hogg: 下界="this sullied world" is a Buddhist term that doesn't fit in a psychology article. Then again "lower limit" from mathematics doesn't either.
