agree ykamada : o-logy with noun must be some studies based on concrete study. - sudy is in general to learn about a subject. Either one will be fit with 環境学 depended on its core segment.

agree Kaori Myatt : Environmental study の方が幅広く使えそうですね。

I suppose "ecology" will be better.

Thanks
disagree Yoshiro Shibasaki, PhD : Ecology is conventionally translated as 生態学.

Thanks anyway
neutral Shinya Ono : Ecology and environmental science overlap to a big extent. I agree with you, except that "environmental science" may fit better in this case.

agree ykamada : Correction: o-logy is a study based on a concrete theory.

Environmental science

Or science of environment. It is a straightforward translation, with over 1 million entries in Google.

First, there is rarely ONE CORRECT answer. For example, I majored in political science but it was called ¥"Government.¥" The same point can be made about political economy and economics, commerce and business, etc. This is particularly true now that most fields of study must be fully interdisciplinary.
Second, there are 231 entries on ¥"environmentology¥" in Google, of which about nearly one-third are from Japan (a smile comes to my face), and there are five entries on ¥"environtology¥" including one in German. There are 2,490,000 entries on ¥"environmental science.¥" Although Google is not a god, this is one aspect of the reality of word usage.
Third, to a layman, it seems the connotation of environmentology is a bit narrower (dealing a lot with relaxation, medicine, etc.) than enviromental science, whereas 情報学 to me is as broad in meaning (perhaps including humanities and social sciences more) as 情報科学. My tentative conclusion: ¥"environmental science¥" is more appropriate for 情報学 in most situations than ¥"environmentology¥" because it is broader in meaning, and is used and understood far more universally (by a 231 to 2,490,00 lead). Environmentology is more appropriate, I infer, in a specifi range of areas.

In a nutshell, the term ¥"environmental science¥" (or environmental sciences) appears to be broad enough in its meaning and fluid enough in its development to encompass both 情報科学and 情報学。

I feel highly complimented. Things should be as simple as possible; this from someone who used to enjoy abstractions.

environmental studies

After reading everyone¥'s comments and a little additional searching I have come up with the following conclusion:

1) S<caron>ツ境科S<caron>w -- environmental science is the study of the environment with a focus on the use of scientific method and discovery.

2) S<caron>ツ境S<caron>w -- environmental studies (please note the plural) are a program of study that includes various approaches to understanding the environment. These approaches include both scientific and non-scientific method, such as art, history, and literature. (See URL below.)

3) environmentology is a substitute word for environmental science and should probably be avoided where rigour is required. By way of example, some people believe that astrology is a science most others would disagree.

Caution: there is a tendency among Japanese to overuse latin derivatives in English. For example, the suffixes ¥"-ism¥" and ¥"-ist¥", which translate into Japanese as -Z<caron>蜍` and -Z<caron>蜍`Z<caron>メ are often abused by Japanese. The terms environmentology and environology are reminiscent of such abuse.

Finally, I would like to offer special thanks to Yoshiro for setting me on the right track with regard to the use of -科S<caron>w and -S<caron>w.
