Japanese term or phrase: 撫でてやると
Dear ProZ members,

how would you translate the following sentence? A girl is talking to her cat in her thoughts.

私が撫でてやると喉を鳴らして

1) When I caress you, you purr.
2) Purr while I caress you.

I would go for number one given the てやると structure, but hearing how it's pronounced it sounds a bit like an imperative, so I'm in doubt.

Thank you!

English translation:Purr when I caress (pet) you
Explanation:
I agree with your reading of the imperative in

鳴らして

therefore I would actually choose number two.

I would change the "while" to "when" as 撫でてやると is more of a cause and effect connotation to the sentence.

It is difficult without knowing the context of the sentence how she is referring to the words she is thinking.
