Japanese to English translations [PRO] Tech/Engineering - Construction / Civil Engineering
Japanese term or phrase:傾きb
From the user manual of a cement moisture meter. This section is called: バイアス値（切片）aと傾きbの設定
Hi David, The whole phrase in your question, バイアス値（切片）aと傾きbの設定, does require two values to be set; bias (intercept) and a slope. This appears to be an internal mathematical representation of physical quantities.
This portion is probably written from the designer's point of view, rather than users'. It is probably like the bias has to set so the meter indicates 0 when the actual moisture is 0, and the slope is to be set so an increment of a physical value (moisture) is correctly reflected to the reading, assuming the bias is set correctly. If this the case, slope is the same thing as sensitivity as summereye suggests. Gain is another word, closer to the internal working.
Coming back to your question, I would put them as bias (intercept0 and slope, because if a Japanese reader understands the original, this translation should make sense to your readers. Especially if you are not sure, you shouldn't be guessing.
Thank you for your answers, but this moisture measuring device doesn't seem to involve input of geometrical values or factors. Is it possible that it is talking about "BIAS" (or another word with similar meaning, because they do use "bias/バイアス" in the same section) and not "SLOPE"? Thanks again for your help.
Explanation: I'm not sure if this is of help, but "傾き" in my Nelson's Japanese Character Dictionary is defined as per the below and in this exact order...(The word "bias" is also there at the end, but I'm going with tendency/trend since the word "bias" in katakana (バイアス) is already being used:
- I tried to access this PDF file but it is damaged. (However it mentions "moisture value bias adjustment."

Moisture value bias adjustment (–9.9 to +9.9%), aver- age value,Upper limit alarm, ..... Unit water estimation, Water/cement ratio estima- ... www.advancesiam.com/ViewDetail.aspx?pid=149
- This sentence was with a moisture meter but for testing moisture in grains:
An integrated bias adjustment may be used to improve correlation with local standards.
- It seems to be an adjustment that is made/calculated in accordance with surroundings (since the surroundings differ with each site)
