Science - Mathematics & Statistics / Functional Analysis
Japanese term or phrase: 問えないこと
What is the meaning of '問えないこと' in the following sentence?

無限次元の空間となると、一般的に言えることは限られる。特に難しいのは、次元が有限でないので、数の勘定をもって固有関数の数の過不足を問えないことである。

This is part of a paper on Functional Analysis. This part of the discussion deals with the difficulty in extending finite dimensional concepts to infinite dimensions.

cannot analyze (examine)

Explanation:
Literal meaning is "cannot ask" but from the context, the author is telling that we cannot conduct a (statistical?) analysis.

Example sentence(s):
  • We cannot analyze (examine) whether the dimension is finite or infinite.

Asker: Thank you. I had been wondering how "cannot ask" will fit into the context. Your explanation helps.

to ask

Explanation:
It seems to me to be literal. We cannot ask how many eigenvalues there are (note that, for an infinite dimensional space, a linear endomorphism may have infinitely many eigenvalues). So they can't count them in a simple finistic way.

I don't like "to analyze", since it can be analyzed.
