Yes, the fellow was right that literally this means the secret of a magic square in Japanese, but what my clever assistant left out was that it's a mathematical term from an old story. Better for you to see an example....

The Japanese text at the site below says that the magic square base means that the numbers total 15 when you add diagonally, horizontally, and vertically.
