Seisaku's family only had a little field to cultivate Explanation: The whole paragraph means as follows: Seisaku's family only had a little field to cultivate. Both his father and mother, therefore, had to work for other families to make a living. Seeing his parents working so hard as not to waste any second, Seisaku did not feel like sitting around although he was only an elementary shool student. He thought he should be able to help his parents in the field even though one of his hands was handicapped. "dekinaikotowa arumai" is double negative and means "should be able to do." "jittoshiteha irarenai" means that he could not just sit around and watch his parents work so hard without doing something himself. "oyano sugatawo miruto" means "as he saw his parents (working hard)." "sugata" means figure, appearance, etc. But you do not necessarily have to translate this word unless you are talking about something like a reflection in a mirror. |
