レベルは2級五段階(E−>A)、1級五段階(E−>A)の計十段階に分けられている。
取りあげた文型、語は主要日本語教科書及び新聞などの資料に基づいている。教科書の中に多く取り入れられているものを必修項目とし(2級レベルE)、取り入れられている頻度は高くないが重要だと思われるものを、最高レベル(1級レベルA)と定めた。
