Japanese term or phrase: 上方後部
This is the prologue to a script dealing with music history. A robot introduces himself here.

I can't figure out exactly where "上方後部" is referring to in the following text.

Also, what would the subject of the sentence be for "不意に落ちつくと、それは…" Is it the audience settling down?

○プロローグ

客電が静かに落ちると、まだ薄暗いステージの上方後部、バルコニーの手摺りの一部が強く輝く。
不意に落ちつくと、それは…
幾何学的にデザインされた球体。アンテナやレンズが突き出してメタリックな印象だ。それが本体内部から光っている。
SEともに目(の様に見える二つの円形のガラス部分)に光が灯ると、声が聞こえる。無邪気な子供の声だ。

upper rear
Explanation:
上方後部 is upper region of the upstage.
The subject of 不意に落ち着く I think is 光 because the sentence before it is 強く輝く. The light is at first glaring but then it softens and reveals the object.

agree  Kurt Hammond: yes, although there could be a more accurate terminology, as this sounds like a 'senmon yougo'

agree  Minoru Kuwahara: if i think about the subject in Japanese, that would be 輝き converted from 輝く, translated into "flush", "beam", "ray", "brilliance", etc.-

  -> 輝きsounds better, indeed.

agree  Gerald Blomgren: This is simply "upstage" in theater-speak. See: http://www.redbirdstudio.com/AWOL/stage.html

  -> "upstage" simply means "closer to the back wall" or 後部. I think 上方means closer to the ceiling.
