This process was made complete by the redditio symboli when the newly baptized would personally and publically profess the Creed before the entire Congregation.
If this is being studied in a course, it may well be in St Augustine who speaks extensively about the matter. A book that might help you:

English translation of Vatican texts is not alway felicitious, and it might be more important to make the meaning clear. Symboli are tokens (which could be texts but might be something else, a pallium for instance).
