decidua and chorionic villi Explanation: I think these are products of conception (which one can see during inspection of the tissue after abortion ) Anatomy The placenta consists of a fetal portion, the chorion frondosum, bearing many **chorionic villi** that interlock with the **decidua** basalis of the uterus, which constitutes the maternal portion. The chorionic villi lie in spaces in the uterine endometrium, where they are bathed in maternal blood and lymph. Inspection of the tissue containing the products of conception (POC) assures that the pregnancy was successfully removed and confirms the duration of gestation. Tissue Recognizable at 5-8 Weeks • Trophoblastic **villi** • Gestational sac • **Decidua** • No embryo Here are the definitions from Taber's Cyclopedic Dictionary: chorion frondosum The outer surface of the chorion. Its ¶villi contact the ¶decidua basalis. This is the placental portion of the chorion. ¶decidua [L. deciduus, falling off] The endometrium or lining of the uterus during pregnancy, and the tissue around the ectopically located fertilized ovum, e.g., in the fallopian tube or peritoneal cavity. The gland structures of the endometrium and the interstitial cells undergo marked hypertrophy. The ¶decidua divides itself into an outer compact layer and an inner spongy layer. The **decidua**, composed of large pale pink cells, is seen here. http://www-medlib.med.utah.edu/WebPath/PLACHTML/PLAC094.html Here is the microscopic appearance of the placental **chorionic villi**. http://www-medlib.med.utah.edu/WebPath/PLACHTML/PLAC090.html HTH Reference: http://www-medlib.med.utah.edu/WebPath/PLACHTML/PLAC090.html Reference: http://www-medlib.med.utah.edu/WebPath/PLACHTML/PLAC094.html |
