You are both right - without context it's not clear where it happened (LT/UK) and what the original sentence looks like (formal/informal). If it's something like 'Maldauju, išvežkit tą išperą mano sūnų į koloniją', then we shouldn't even be diving into the depths of terminology... but again, only dalia123 knows. The rest is just guesswork.

Yes, "LT>EN guy", another illustration of how important context is. This won't be resolved unless „dalia123“ speaks up. The key to my doubts is „mama prašo ...“. As far as I know, no minor can be locked up in a prison-type detentional facility (whatever you want to call it) just because „mama prašo ...“. At most, I think it would be a "Community Home".

Gintautas, to me it seems clear that the mother feels there is a domestic abuse situation going on (the son being the perpetrator) and she is seeking to have him removed from her home. "Kolonija" does not refer to any current institution, be it Lithuanian, British or otherwise (unless this is happening in Russia). We can only guess what exactly the means (esp. given her evidently poor grasp of the process/terminology); all we know it is some kind of detention she means. As you correctly point out, the asker seems to be taking no interest, so I think we should all rest our cases (for the time being at least).

Well, why does the sentence given say „mama prašo socialinės tarnybos ir policijos pagalbos ir nori kad jos 13 m. vaikas būtų paimtas į koloniją“? If the child were an "offender", mamos prašymas would not be needed. Another thing is, since „dalia123“ is not responding, how do we know where the LT text comes from and whether it is an original LT text? Maybe it the institution (kolonija) referred to is actually in UK, in which case it would be a "Community Home" (nepilnamečių prieglauda).

I think Gintautas was simply unclear on whether a "kolonija" refers to a detention facility or a shelter. However, "kolonija" is definitely a type of prison, and in this case (since the person in question is 13) the mother is referring to a juvenile prison. Gintautas may be unaware that "kolonija" is the term for standard-security Soviet prisons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prisons_in_Russia). It does not have to be necessarily for young offenders. C.f. the full name of GULag: Glavnoye upravleniye lagerey i koloniy.

That said, the situation described indicates very loose usage. First of all, citizens (including mothers) have the right to have offences against them investigated and indicted offenders prosecuted, they don't have the right to request for (specific) punishment per se. Right? Also, putting someone under 14 through the criminal process is generally not possible in Lithuania. This does raise the doubt that perhaps the mother (and/or the asker) has in mind a "socializacijos centras" type of place, i.e. basically a 2-in-1 detention center/school for young delinquents. Anyway, it is clearly not a shelter that is being referred to.
