Malay term or phrase: Negeri-Negeri Tanah Melayu
On a Malaysian birth-certificate. Is this "The Federated Malay States"? Or is there some other standard way of translating it?

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

The birth certificate is relatively recent, but I am concerned that it may be an old form (circa 1957).

States of the Malay Peninsula
Explanation:
Negeri-negeri Melayu Bersekutu (and maybe Persekutuan Tanah Melayu?) is Federated Malay States.

Thank you for your help. At least you have helped me rule out "Federated Malay States". I think I will just translate as "The Malay States" -- because "of the peninsular" is not mentioned. Unless of course "Tanah Melayu" refers to the Malay Peninsular exclusive of other parts of Malaysia.
