snurpenot

In the absence of anything to the contrary that is convincing, I'm going to propose "snurpenot" > "purse seine" and "ringnot" > "ring net". This is what finally triggered that choice:

"Det var islendingene som utviklet snurpenota videre til ringnot og etter dette tok større fartøy over og nota ble satt og halt fra moderfartøyet. Redskapet og tilhørende fartøy blir i dag omtalt med mange navn: (storsnurper, ringnot, kystnot, landnot osv.) Redskapet virker i all enkelhet ved at en pelagisk stim blir "ringet" inn, fanget ved at noten "snurpes" sammen og så håvet om bord når noten nesten er tatt om bord eller ferdig tørket. Redskapet er regnet som det mest effektive (i nesten alle forhold; verdi, drivstoff, kvalitet etc.), men har selvsagt også sine utfordringer (utslipp av skadet fangst, fangst under minstemålet, velferd o.l.)."

In addition, there are references elsewhere to "purse seines" that predate the advent of the power block.

Yes, I read that too, and decided it was too difficult as they were both "Seine Nets", hence my coward's way out!

So now I'm confronted with the choice of using "ring net" for "snurpenot" and "purse seine" for "ringnot". Sigh.

"In many European fisheries, the ring net was the fore-runner to purse seine for targeting shoals of pelagic fish. Ring nets are generally smaller and lighter than a purse seine and, in the beginning, were operated by two vessels. The main difference between a ring net and a purse seine is that in a traditional ring net, the footrope is fixed to the bottom of the netting by short ropes, where as in a purse seine, the footrope runs through rings that are attached to the bottom of the netting. This allows the bottom of the purse seine to be closed up (pursed) by hauling on the purse line that runs through the rings. Nowadays, many modern ring nets also use the running purse line system to close the bottom of the gear. In some fisheries, they classify the different pelagic surrounding nets by the way that they are hauled, and where the fish are congregated before taking them on board. A purse seine is hauled from one end, with the strengthened bunt section at the last end of the net to be hauled on board. Charles, I too have had a good look round the references, and conclude that the Anglophone fishermen did not change the name when the new method came in, unlike the Norwegians who arguably are more specialised in trawling.
You could translate the phrase as
'Common fishing methods included both traditional and modern methods of purse seine netting, as well as factory trawlers.'
