Nawiercone w otworze wiertniczym poziomy wód izoluje się przez zarurowanie i uszczelnia w taki sposób, aby nie wystąpiło przemieszczanie się tych wód poza rurami oraz ich zanieczyszczenie.

W terminologii geologicznej funkcjonują ponadto pojęcia z.w.p. (z.w.g.) nawierconego i ustalonego:

nawiercone – oznacza poziom (najczęściej w metrach p.p.t. lub n.p.m.) na którym stwierdzono z.w.g. w otworze wiertniczym. Z reguły jest to poziom spągu warstwy nieprzepuszczalnej czyli stropu warstwy wodonośnej i odpowiada poziomowi zwierciadła napiętego (który może być bardzo zróżnicowany zależnie od położenia w poziomie).
ustalone (ustabilizowane) – poziom na którym zwierciadło ustabilizowało się. Najczęściej następuje to w ciągu niewielu minut lub godzin i poziom ten odpowiada zwierciadłu swobodnemu (linia ciśnień piezometrycznych).
