Nawiercone w otworze wiertniczym poziomy wód izoluje się przez zarurowanie i uszczelnia w taki sposób, aby nie wystąpiło przemieszczanie się tych wód poza rurami oraz ich zanieczyszczenie.

W terminologii geologicznej funkcjonują ponadto pojęcia z.w.p. (z.w.g.) nawierconego i ustalonego:

nawiercone – oznacza poziom (najczęściej w metrach p.p.t. lub n.p.m.) na którym stwierdzono z.w.g. w otworze wiertniczym. Z reguły jest to poziom spągu warstwy nieprzepuszczalnej czyli stropu warstwy wodonośnej i odpowiada poziomowi zwierciadła napiętego (który może być bardzo zróżnicowany zależnie od położenia w poziomie).
ustalone (ustabilizowane) – poziom na którym zwierciadło ustabilizowało się. Najczęściej następuje to w ciągu niewielu minut lub godzin i poziom ten odpowiada zwierciadłu swobodnemu (linia ciśnień piezometrycznych).

Actually there is potential to pollute the aquifers when drilling through them to get to fracking depths; there is potential for cement casing compromise due to geological plate shifting sub-surface thus causing the "unknown fracking chemical cocktail" (thanks to the Halliburton Loophole engineered by Dick Cheney) to seep into the drilled through aquifers along methane contamination during the extraction process.
