The Grand Duchy of Lithuania
Explanation:
Unfortunately gfabian is far from being right. The only correct term is the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
This was one of the greatest medieval European states that stretched from the Baltic to the Black sea. Actually this was the Belarusian state (at the time present Belarus was named Litva and present Lithuania was named Zhmudz). Historically though it is named the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In particular it is famous for the medieval Statute in which there were detailed criminal and civil codes. One of the Grand Dukes became a Polish king - Jagello. Its soldiers constituted the major part of the joint Polish-Lithuanian (Belarusian)army at Grunwald (1410)and its army was considered the most powerful in the fiftienth-sixtienth centuries. In the end of the sixteenth century it signed a unity with the Polish crown (Unia Lubelska). If you are interested in more info contact me personally.
References: own knowledge (I live in the heart of the former Grand Duchy) and a lot of historical sources. As for the exact English term it can be found, for example, in the Oxford English Reference Dictionary
