Asker: "until I made my way into the church" sounds perfect

when I felt the (inner) need to go to church

Explanation:
I read this as a transformative, spiritual event, not a chance event. The chance event could be translated as,
"After many years, that day arrived, when I happened to have entered a church."
So, there are at least two possible nuances here.

neutral  LilianNekipelov: I think it is too far-fetched, and too long--it is a poem.

it dawned on me

Explanation:
you can see the explanation of this term when you google it - but it means you realize it for the first time or something like it occurred to me
it's more of an american expression as well

the fate made me/led me

Explanation:
