Portuguese term or phrase: the lowdown on - LEVANTAMENTO DE ROTA
Suas atividades, voltadas para a procura de novas técnicas e para o aprimoramento da instrução militar viabilizaram a execução das primeiras escolas do fogo, que foram realizadas a partir de 1935, além de ser o pioneiro, no Brasil, em EXERCÍCIOS NOTURNOS DE LEVANTAMENTO DE ROTA COM APOIO DE HOLOFOTES, em 1937.

I translated this (what's in capitals) as 'searchlight-aided target acquisition' and was told it was wrong, that in fact it should have been 'searchlight-aided surveying', which strikes me as odd (who surveys by night? Is this logical, even in the military?)

Context: It refers to a fortress that overlooks a bay and acts as a defence bulwark for the bay.

My own (apparaently wrong) answer was based on info I obtained through this site. I am now thoroughly intrigued, and would appreciate information and opinions, and references if at all possible.

Thanks in advance.

route survey
Explanation:
Hi ailish,
levantamento means survey in portuguese -of that I am absolutely sure
rota means course or route (when refering to maritim issues).
The full translation would be:
nocturnal route survey exercises/training(/drill) with the help of projector/searchlight.
In plain language all it means is that they were doing exercises in order to find a certain route(s)/course(s).These took place at night with the help of projector light or searchlight...
so you see you translated correctly searchlight aided...BUT target acquisition was def.completly wrong.
Should have been route survey
Hope that helps!
Regards.

I think the bit about surveying is OK, but I still don't know how this surveying takes place. I have a feeling that this is a very specific military term.

the lowdown on - LEVANTAMENTO DE ROTA

Going round the search of new technique and for development of muilitary instruction, their activities revealed first exercises of schools of lighting, which were realized starting 1935. In addition to being pioneer in Brazil, in 1927 they realized the night exercises of finding (detremination of, tracing of) paths with the help of projectors.

At least, the sense of these exercises is to rtace path (for ships, etc.) in night-time with the help of projectors. Pity, I cannot conclude whether the text is related to a single person (because "suas" is either "plural" or delicate addressing (suas a(c)tividades = their activities, your activities).

monitoring

Explanation:
I'm not claiming to know.
But what was a guard detachment doing overlooking a bay?
Presumably, they were monitoring the traffic in it.
What were they doing with searchlights?
Presumably, they were practising firing warning shots, to discourage the import of Rolexes and the export of substances.
So,
they'd have been monitoring by searchlight / carrying out exercises in searchlight monitoring.
I suspect that "survey" is one of those English words with a myriad of uses in Brazilian English, that no one else understands. There must be a cognate, perhaps obsolete, along the lines of
sobrevigilancia, with a circ on the first a.
I hope you have a good contact with your client, so you can get down to brass tacks, and not be stuck in formulaic abstract nouns or, worse, pidgin English.
