Portuguese term or phrase: sub-aéreo
From a technical report on problems with a Brazilian dam:

"...foi prevista a disposição de rejeito arenoso, pelo método sub-aéreo, na forma de um Empilhamento Drenado de Rejeitos Arenosos."

I have translated "Empilhamento Drenado de Rejeitos Arenosos" as "Dry Stacking of Sand Tailings," but I'm not sure what the "método sub-aéreo" might mean.

Thank you/Obrigada!

Explanation:
Suggestion, based on the example below.

I would suggest "sandy wastes" as the translation for "rejeitos arenosos". Examples:

"The sand wastes of the Sahara have in recent years been partially explored, especially by French observers from the Algerian frontier...."

"Vast stretches of yellow sand, sandy wastes are the most identifiable deserts of Athas."

agree  Matthew Salt: Agree, but I believe the term derives from mining rather than geology. In Mining, Tailings can be discharged using subaqueous (below water) or subaerial techniques (above the water line, on the ground or on a tailings beach) "
