Portuguese term

bolinhos de ovo

Not for points Portuguese to English Other Cooking / Culinary Doces de Portugal
Hello fellow Proz-ers,

I am working on a translation about 'Doces de Portugal' and there is a reference made to 'bolinhos de ovo'. I believe that this refers to Scotch eggs in English (see here for an example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scotch_egg), but I just wanted to check with fellow Proz-ers that I have the right idea!

The context reads, "Os bolinhos de ovo e um vasto sortido de bolos secos...'

In England, a Scotch egg would be considered a savoury dish, is it the same in Portugal or is it possible to buy a sweet version of this? My other thought is that it is referring to little cakes made with eggs (bolinhos de ovo) and cakes made without eggs (bolos secos)?

Many thanks in advance for any advice offered.
Proposed translations (English)
3 Scotch Egg
3 egg cookies
2 sweet egg cakes

As a matter of interest, why "not for points"?

Thank you to all Thank you very much for your responses. Douglas, yes, my research showed up pictures of the bolinhos de ovo in little paper cases, which was why I thought it a little strange that they should be Scotch eggs. Thank you though, your description has clarified it perfectly for me! Nick and Verginia, thank you to you both too for your valuable input.

Hi,

Although Scotch eggs are transalated as bolinhos de ovo, I think what you are talking about are small sweets made of egg yolk sugar and a bit of lemon rind. . The eggs and sugar are beaten until double in size and served in small paper cake cups

I had never heard this term in Portugal but a quick look around culinary sites confirmed your guess!

sweet egg cakes

I"m guessing "sweet egg cakes". But there is a delicious sweet that is shaped like and egg and it is caramelized after it's done but it's called "ouriço"....

egg cookies

I don´t think it might have anything to do with ''Ovos moles de Aveiro'', which as you probably know is a taditional sweet. It's covered with a thin white layer and inside there's a stuffing which is just made of eggs.
