Online found ref. to Direito de plantao -- but what is it. The usage I'm must familiar with is being em plantao, on duty (military or police).

comment re 'squatters' rights'

Maybe I'm off the mark, but the previous contributor's answer brought to mind - squatters' rights. This term pre-dates the more modern connotations of 'squatters'. It's a concept of law, whereby after X number of years (varies from country to country), a person may acquire certain rights (even possibly ownership) of property, from the mere fact of having occupied the property all those year, although the person may haçve no documents (Amazon natives?)

Also called to mind is the Spanish 'plantarse' which means to 'stay/stay put'
