Portuguese to English translations [PRO]
Portuguese term or phrase: ou deme
From an academic paper.
"...uma so populacao-local, OU DEME, comunidade reprodutora caracterizada por determinada pool genetico." The words in capitals.
I'm assuming that it is equivalent to "ou seja", and that "deme" is the present subjunctive, but can anyone tell me of what verb?
lexical
English translation:deme
Explanation:
"deme: Ecology. A local population of a species viewed as a randomly interbreeding group. Also, PANMICTIC UNIT."

Thank you, Jon - and Marcio and Ailish also - for putting me on the right track. I'd so convinced myself that "ou deme" was an antique variant of "ou seja" that I was blinded to the possibility of its being an English technical term and therefore a noun.
Ao Marcio, os meus agradecimentos mais profundos pelas explicacoes compreensivas.

População panmítica

Explanation:
I found the following definition in the "Glossário de Recursos Genéticos Vegetais" of Embrapa: "deme - População local em que os cruzamentos entre os indivíduos dão-se ao acaso; população panmítica." but I´m afraid that it has no meaning, at all.

I hope it helps

Some more references in the genetic field

Explanation:
I still do not have any ideia about what \"deme\" means, but i found the article below about deme in a genetical context.
In the second link I found a reference to \"deme\" in English ( Goldberg,D.E., H. Kargupta and E. Cantú-Paz(1995), Critical deme size for serial and parallel genetic algorithms. Technical Report IlliGAL 95002, University of Illinois at Urbana.)
