Portuguese term or phrase: A PIQUE DE TIRAR O FÔLEGO & etc
This is from an article about a Portuguese motorcyclist who will take part in the Paris Dakar. The parts in CAPITALS are bothering me and I would appreciate any suggestions that help me offload this before Santa Claus arrives!

steep enough to wipe you out
Explanation:
I hit (literally suffered) (sand) dunes steep enough to wipe out anyone, and the bike was buried a number of times.

FIGURINO is quoted out of context - the original article said "as etapas foram duríssimas e foi precisamente todo este figurino que caracterizou a prova," so figurino here indicates something like "every stage was extremely hard and it was just like this all through the race"

Registar is a variant of registrar, so "it always counts to be the best.."

Mayer... "as I was riding a Maratona (up 400cc class bike) and had a super-production model (?653cc)it's easy to see the difference between our bikes.

Hope this helps and that Santa brought you lots of presents!

Thanks Tim (it's cold & wet here too!). I had almost given up hope and had revised the text and searched the web, until the meaning became clearer. It coincides with your explanations (Mine were 'I took on dunes that would take your breath away...'; '..and this describes exactly how ...were...'for figurino; 'good for the record' or similar, for registrar; and finally Marathon and Super Production are categories of trials (for specific kinds of bikes)). However, I will probably incorporate some of your suggestions, and am very grateful for your clearing up my doubts. I'm off to start cooking, so Merry Christmas and a successful 2001.
