As telef points out, the word "carência" does also mean "lack" or "shortage," and -- in banking and financial jargon "shortfall" -- but that meaning is not applicable here, except to the extent to which it implies that the borrower is entitled to a period with a "lack" of payments (that is, a period during which no loan payments are required to be made).
