Portuguese term or phrase: Encerrou o pregão
the sentence reads: " Nem a redução no preço do barril de petróleu nem a ligeira recuperação nos mercados externos foram suficientes para animar os investidores da Bovespa, que encerrou o pregão em queda de 2,52% e volume de R$ 640 milhões."
Any help much appreciated.

Thanks so much. They are all acceptable answers except I can't figure why they use the word "Pregão)when "market" is what they mean and what I reckoned was meant!

trading closed.. bidding closed

Explanation:
This is a commodities market not the stock exchange, so prices for oil are bid on throughout the day, with prices going up or down....until trading for the day is closed.

Thus: Bovespar investors, who closed bidding...

Pregão (auction) is used to ....

Explanation:
designate both the trading room or "floor" of a stock exchange and the normal trading hours in that exchange. You will also find "recinto de negociações" in the meaning of floor exchange e "pregão de viva voz" for the transactions in the trading room and "pregão eletrônico" for the computer aided trading systems (CATS).

Pregão is more specific than mercado (market), as it refers specifically to the normal hours of trading in the floor exchange, while market encompasses also the CATS, the after-hours market, the OTC market and sometimes even the primary market.

I would add that "Bovespa Index" would be slightly more precise than "Bovespa shares".
