A Theory of Constraints de Eli Goldratt considera que toda e qualquer alocação (RATEIO) de custos (ou despesas) não totalmente variáveis como arbitrária, isto é, pode mudar a informação contábil dependendo somente em qual indicador é escolhido para determinar a alocação de custos. Despesas operacionais podem ser atribuídas a categorias e não a produtos, como custo de mão-de-obra direta, aluguel, telefonia, energia elétrica, etc.
