This is very, very embarrassing. Comments were made, by me, in a private email to David regarding his choice, who decided to publicly post them on Kudoz! I'm upset. I have just written to Paul with my apologies, as I would sincerely like to be friends.

Your choice was totally correct.
You didn't misinterpret the point of this section of the site, although many colleagues seem to starve for points.
I didn't see Richard’s objection that Paul’s answer shouldn't have been chosen. He didn't say that.

Have I misinterpreted the point of this section of the site???!! I thought the overriding motive here was not only to help askers on voluntary basis but also any other individual seeking the same term. It seems, however, that the wonderful world of brownie points is more important.

I discussed the term with lawyers in Sao Paulo and we all reached the same conclusion, namely, that any translation, in the instance of our specific case, must contain the words “life”, “member” and “board”. There is only one answer here that fits this. Anyone else who wishes to consult this term can see all the other responses and references submitted, and make up their own mind.

If, however, people’s only incentive here is self-interest and some hallowed points system, I guess the geezer who taps the ball in the net is the one who gets his name on the scoresheet, irrespective of the fact that some bloke has run the length of the field to provide the assist. There’s nothing I can do to avoid that… other than leave the question open. (Of course, if these points equal thousands of pounds and a Lamborghini, I take it all back....).

Thanks all. These are all good. I wasn't looking for a translation for "conselho deliberativo", as there are already several "official" equivalents (but they are all "boards"). I came to the same conclusion as you, Paul - he is a life member of a board (and this fits and explains the text perfectly). Once again, many thanks.

The generic translation for "Conselho" is Board. So, you have a Board of Directors, an Auditing Board, a Sports Board, a Deliberative Board, etc..

There are a lot of names on that list!
"Conselho Deliberativo" would be "Deliberative Council" - I can't decide what his actual status would be, whether he is simply a member, or a lifeling member re: my post. It's a tough one :/
