for all intents and purposes Explanation: We really need more of the sentence here, but the literal meaning is probably "for the purposes that may become necessary" Usually in English you put both intents and purposes even tho' only purposes is in Portuguese. You'll have to add to "for all intents and purposes.." if there's more to the sentence (...of law, for example). |

"to all intents and purposes" ----------------------------- This cliche (meaning "practically") is a shortening of the legal phrase "to all intents, constructions, and purposes" (found in an act adopted under Henry VIII in 1547).
