Portuguese to English translations [PRO]
Portuguese term or phrase: portal
portal - na internet, um portal oferece informações variadas, links para outros sites, buscador...é mais do que uma página virtual...como dizer portal em inglês? Alguém pode me ajudar?
MMagda
English translation:gateway
Explanation:
I have clients whose web pages offer more than the basics.
They therefore feel justified in using the term "gateway", as used by on-line services such as CompuServe, to mean a gateway through to the Internet; with, but not of, the Internet.
The cognate "portal" is good English, but does not occur in the same register, nor have the same frequency, as "gateway".
Your client may prefer "portal". There is in this case no reason for not letting your client have the last word.
If you are not referring to your client's own web pages, but to a glossary, the better functional rendering is "gateway".

home page

Explanation:
Your text ("...oferece informações variadas, links para outros sites, buscador...") describes a home page.

However, the English word "portal" is also used (although not so often as "gateway") in the telecommunications system design area, with reference to the hardware and software configurations that allow access to the Internet as a whole.
