Portuguese term or phrase: River Guadiana
River Guadiana or Guadiana River?
What's the difference
alice
English translation:River Guadiana
Explanation:
I don't think many people would agree with Parrot's sweeping statement. For example, no-one talks about the Thames River, the Seine River or the Rhine River. It is true that the word 'river' often comes second in the USA (e.g. the Mississippi River)but it normally precedes the proper name in European usage.

Guadiana River.

Explanation:
Apart from the famous film title "Bridge over the River Kwai", all other rivers in English first take the name of the river before the word "River". If they are big enough or famous enough, they sometimes do not need the word "River" (the Nile, the Amazon, the Danube, the Guadalquivir).
