Portuguese term or phrase:...vizinhança óptima..números proprios o significativos..
Specific to CLUSTERING MODELS/MATHS: I need to confirm that the 1st is 'nearest neighbour', or could it be 'optimum neighbour' - or is it the same concept? The 2nd is confusing because the context is not clear (mathematical notation). Finally 'cromossoma' in reference to genetic algorithms has be be 'chromosome', doesn't it?
HC's ans too was useful, but I still have doubts. I'm familiar with 'nearest neighbour' but its described in my text as 'optimo difuso', 'metodo de vizinhança' and even at times it seems as if 'clusters' are thrown in for good measure! I also checked the web,and the final result is that I'm still left with a margin of doubt! ta anyway to everybody. 2 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer
Vizinhanca optima: I think it is, like you say, "nearest neighbor" or "best neighbor" may be better!
Numeros proprios should be "Whole numbers"
Numeros significativos should be "Significant numbers"
and yes, "Cromossoma" is "Chromosome".

Explanation: vizinhança óptima = nearest neighbor [neighbour]. This concept appears in both atomic crystallography and the esoteric world of theoretical math. My web search turned up more than 32,000 hits in the latter field, including the site (first one below) with the following article: "Efficient search for approximate nearest neighbor in high-dimensional spaces"; with the following keywords: "nearest-neighbor search, data structures..."
I haven't found anything specific on "números proprios"; however, it probably isn't "integers" (which would be "números enteros"). The McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical terms includes "proper fractions", "proper functions" (i.e., eigenfunctions), and "proper subsets"; but you'll probably have to consult a text in higher maths for confirmation of "proper number."
As for "significant numbers," your document could be referring to either significant figures or significant digits. As explained in the second web site below, "...significant figures are digits that are statistically significant.
... The rules for expressing the correct number of significant digits in a computed result speak of the significant digits in each number or value involved in the computation..." (about 17,000 hits each for "significant numbers" and "significant digits")
Explanation: see the text below:
Placement involves the allocation of cells on the silicon in optimum proximity so that the resultant routing is kept as short as possible. For digital circuits this process is implemented automatically although some design systems provide a layout editor to enable the designer to make manual adjustments. For analogue and mixed signal circuits theallocation of the analogue cells has to be done manually using the layout editor.
