Portuguese to English translations [PRO] Art/Literary - Poetry & Literature / Literature
Now that it's becoming clearer, I would put it this way: "- under the watchful eye of the owner of the bar, she even mustered a smile" (despite everything, I suppose...). But I hope you find the wording that fits, after all, the story is more familiar to you than to us...
You are right, Katarina. She wasn't smiling, so this was a sudden smile following that awkward silence. So, I would chose your answer (that was my choice too), but I wanted to read more opinions about this one, because I wasn't sure about what to put. You all have been very helpful!
The question is, was she smiling before, and why? In which case, Floriana's answer would fit. But if she wasn't smiling before, she must have mustered a smile following her dense silence, knowing the owner of the bar was watching her...in any case, that's how I see it.
I didn't put it here in the first place, 'cause I thought it wouldn't help, but I hope it does!
