In Brazil, up to the coming into effect of the new Civil Code (2003), the longest prescription period was 20 years. Thus, if you proved that the property had been registered in your name for the last twenty years, that would be final evidence that it was yours, regardless of who owned it before and how you had acquired it. The longest prescription period, now, is only ten years.
