Portuguese term or phrase: têm destas coisas
The text reads: "Os tempos modernos têm destas coisas. Quando tudo parecia indicar que já muito se havia evoluído em termos do acess à informação, eis que surge a Internet.

A passage extolling the virtues of the Internet.
Sue Simons
happenings
Explanation:
To translate 'têm destas coisas' literally is to miss the deep sense of the sentence. The whole context shows the Internet as a happening, not a mere thing. Thus, the translation should evidence this fact, as in:

"Modern times happenings. When everything seemed to indicate that we had reached a lot in terms of access to information, there it is: the Internet.
Um texto em louvor das virtudes da Internet."

All the answers hae given me a clue. There is nothing else before that sentence. It is the start of the text! Hence my problem. I think I shall translate it as: Modern times are amazing - or some such. Many thanks.

things like that

Explanation:
"Things like that happen in the modern times"

I take for granted that these "things" have been mentioned before.

such things; things like that

Explanation:
As said in the other suggestion, but I would say: "Such things should not come unexpected in modern times..."
Nothing but a more "elegant" sentence...
:-)

Good luck.

Modern times? Just one of those things. And just when etc

Explanation:
In Portuguese, tem destas coisas can apply to a plural. Not so in the English expression: It's just one of those things. 'Cause modern times is plural. So, to avoid saying,it's once of those things since this sentence of yours has an essayish or journalistic tone, I suggest a common writing device: the question followed by a answer with no verb. :)
