En realidad, la opción elegida dependerá del contexto en cuestión, pues a pesar de "tiendas" responder por la mayor parte de las traducciones posibles, en muchos casos se usan otras palabras y expresiones (y no "tiendas"). Por ejemplo, una gran empresa, dotada de varios departamentos, depósito, fábrica, etc., que tiene un local en una dirección aparte sólo para la exposición y venta de sus productos, probablemente lo llamará "local", "salón de ventas", u otra opción similar.
Se usa "tiendas" especialmente en el caso de comercio minorista (pero no en todos los casos, repito).
