După modelul european, începând cu secolul al X-lea românii, inclusiv în zona X, aderă la ideea asociaţionismului, care se manifestă pe mai multe planuri ale societăţii politice sau civile, determinând apariţia unor organisme asociative, care reuneau interesele comune ale unei bresle, ale unei comunităţi socio-profesionale sau chiar a întregii naţiuni. Cazul X este unul de excepţie, fiind poate cea mai importantă asociaţie a românilor, cu acoperire „naţională” la nivelul întregii X şi, mai mult decât atât, cu reprezentare în toate nivelele social-culturale.
Principala direcţie de manifestare a fenomenului asociaţionist a fost cea culturală. Poate mai mult ca oricând, intelectualitatea românească a înţeles rolul culturii - şi prin aceasta înţelegem, de fapt, alfabetizare - dar nu a unei clase sociale limitate la un procent redus din populaţie, la elită, ci a unui număr cât mai mare de români. Practic, putem vorbi de un fenomen cultural care viza educarea masivă a maselor de oameni simpli.
